This essay explores Habermas' (transcendental) pragmatic and historicist hermeneutic conception of philosophy as "stand-in (Platzhalter) and interpreter" (Habermas (1999), p. 4) in view of his critique of Kantian notions of theoretical and practical reason, metaphysics, epistemology and ethics. Further, it is argued that Habermas' pragmatic-hermeneutic perspectives coherently shift the philosophical focus away from subject-centered, mind-dependent substance dualism, logically entailing regress ad infinitum with regard to Cartesian skepticism, towards intersubjective and social (communicative) approaches to rationality, truth, knowledge and morality. In order to demonstrate this thesis, the argument is divided into four sections: Initially, the centrality of (philosophy of) the subject is outlined with respect to Kant's facultative bisection of cognition and his transcendental idealism in order to be juxtaposed with Habermas' theory of communicative reason. Secondly, Kant's (foundationalist) epistemology and metaphysics are contrasted with pragmatic and hermeneutic approaches to highlight Habermas' rejection of Kantian formalism – and foundationalism, as well as the superiority of philosophy qua legum lator. Moreover, Rorty's radically contingent account of the role of philosophy is outlined in order to expound Habermas' defense of (the importance of) philosophy and reason in modernity. Fourthly, the similarities between Kant and Habermas with regard to moral cognitivism and transcendental claims are assessed in order to critically examine the extent to which his project can exclusively be conceptualised as a critique of Kantian philosophy.
